The Theatre Company Frequently Asked Questions

Please note: We require a current, valid photo ID and a local address and phone number(s) for all costume rentals.

What does it cost to rent a costume?
Complete costume prices range between $30 – $75, and can go higher depending upon what accessories you add. Generally, a complete costume runs between $40 and $50. If you just need a partial costume, the minimum rental is $10.

What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, local checks, and Visa, MastCard, Discover, and American Express. The owner of the card must be the renter of record.

Is there a security deposit?
Yes, we do require a security deposit while the costume is in your possession. A credit card is easiest; we simply hold the payment guarantee until you return the costume. If you choose to pay your deposit using cash, the amount is usually between $100 and $300 depending on the costume you select; cash is returned to you when you return the costume. We do not accept checks for deposits.

How long can I keep my costume?
Rental rates are for 3 days (72 hours). We encourage you to select and pay for your costume well in advance – there is no extra charge for this, and it guarantees your costume will be waiting for you when you need it. Late returns are subject to a $10/day charge.

Do I have to come in myself to reserve my costume?
No, you don’t have to – but we can only do our best work when the costume wearer is there to try it on! It is absolutely best to come in, in person. If this is not possible, understand that we cannot guarantee proper fit. There are no refunds on costumes once rented.

Can I order a single costume over the phone or the web?
Unfortunately, no. You are welcome to call to find out if we have a specific costume, but since we rent hundreds of costumes daily, the only way to know for sure is to come in. Priority is given to customers in the store.

How long does it take to rent a costume?
Well, the paperwork only takes a few minutes – but the selection process depends on YOU. If you’re just browsing, it can take hours; even if you know exactly what you want, it can take time to find the perfect option for you. Please plan enough time for us to do our best job for you – it can be as long as a couple of hours, or as short as a few minutes. Please remember that during peak times, especially the latter half of October, the store can get quite crowded with waits for assistance, dressing rooms, and check-out.

When do I pay for my costume?
Rentals must be paid at the time costumes are reserved. There are no cancellations or refunds. Exchanges, when possible, are subject to a $15 exchange fee.

Can someone else pick up and/or return my costume?
Yes, but be sure to tell us when you rent the costume who will be picking it up, and make sure to give them your paid rental receipt. If someone else is returning your costume, be aware that they will receive the deposit refund paperwork. Cash deposit refunds will only be released to the original renter.

How long will it take to pick up or return my costume?
99% of the time, only a couple of minutes, especially if you prepay your deposit with a credit card. We have a special location for pick-up and drop off, so you never have to wait in a line of customers selecting costumes. Be sure to bring your rental receipt with you.

What happens if I spill something on my costume?
If we can clean it, there is usually no charge. Please note and stains or damage when you return the costume; it helps us to know what happened.

What does it cost if I damage the costume?
Usually, it costs little or nothing. We wear costumes all the time – so we know your costume has been worn before, and we expect normal wear and tear. So don’t worry about a lost button or a broken zipper – just point it out so we can be sure to fix it. You are responsible for replacement costs on unreturned or non-repairable items.

Do I have to clean my costume?
No. It is cleaned or laundered before you pick it up, and we take care of cleaning it when you return it. We do ask that you bring your costume back on the hangers it came with if you can, for speedy check-in.

When is my costume due back?
Generally, 3 days after you pick it up. If you’ve already rented a costume, check your receipt; your return date and our hours are printed on it. If you need a longer period, we offer low-cost options – provided they are arranged in advance.

Can I ship my costume back to The Theatre Company?
If a personal return is not possible, we do accept UPS and common carrier deliveries; but let us know when you rent your costume so we’ll know when to expect it back and you avoid automatic late charges.

What should I do if I forget to return my costume?
Call us! Then bring it back soon. Late returns generate $10/day late fees automatically. We’ll work with you to resolve problems, but you have to call us first.
